" OLD MASTERS-NEW VISIONS " PAINTING SEMINAR & EXHIBITION

AN ARIZONA ART ODYSSEY with Prof. Philip Rubinov Jacobson

Camp Verde - Sedona, Arizona

May 17 - 29, 2009

2 week seminar

Join us on a creative odyssey to the Grand Canyon State of Arizona, one of the most beautiful places in America. Camp Verde is rich in history with the Sinagua, the Ancestral Puebloan people, and the Native American tribes of the Yavapai & Tonto-Apache. The people of Camp Verde preserve and honor their heritage which adds to the beauty of this locale. At an elevation of 3,147 feet and surrounded by mountains, Camp Verde valley is green and lush. (In fact, "verde" is the Spanish name for green.) Camp Verde is centrally located and is only 90 miles north from the center of Phoenix and 42 miles south of Flagstaff. You can visit many other cities on a short trip from Camp Verde: 20 miles to sacred and magical Sedona, 26 miles to Jerome, 16 miles to Cottonwood, only 5 miles to Lake Montezuma, and 40 miles to Prescott. You may even choose to make a day trip to the Grand Canyon. Arizona is a fanastic and beautiful landscape; an ideal place to learn the painting-secrets of the old masters and unleash your new visions!

THE PAINTING SEMINAR
MAY 18 - 29, 2009
2 week seminar
"Classic Mixed-technique of Egg Tempera and Oil Painting"
This classic approach to the art of painting is methodical and liberating in the building of a picture in egg tempera and oils and ends the common 'frustration' experienced by oil painters at all levels of experience. During the Renaissance, particularly in Italy, innovations and the need to paint faster than in the Northern European manner evolved out of the methods of the Van Eycks, Durer and Holbein. In this workshop, we avoid the time-consuming process involved in the typical Flemish/German approach without sacrificing the effects available through combining both water-based and oil media. The incredible "luminosity" that can only be achieved in a 'mische' or 'mixed-technique', and the ability to create an amazing depth, ambiance and atmosphere in our paintings is offered in this seminar. Through the brilliant 'division of labor' devised by the old masters in under painting in egg tempera white and overlaying glazes and layers of radiant resin-oil color, each artist learns to quickly realize their vision. The participant will discover an excellent and sound method that is fast and lends itself to absolutely any style, or means of expression. Prof. Phil is renowned for his extensive knowledge of painting and for his highly individualized teaching style and dedication to assisting each artist in developing their own particular technical approach while encouraging their unique visual language.

In this seminar on the "classic mische", or 'mixed-technique of egg tempera and oil painting we avoid the typically slow-process of under-painting on an egg emulsion ground and instead achieve the same universal effects through a division of labor and quick-dry mediums. The participant will discover an excellent and sound method that is fast and lends itself to absolutely any style, or means of expression. We combine the best advantages of the Italians by building a picture through a limited palette to create an underlying color unity, while adding the Flemish and German advantages of the 'optical greys', neutral tones and luminosity that can only be achieved through modeling and hi-lighting in egg tempera white and over painting in layers and glazes of oil color. NOTE: RETURNING ARTISTS from previous seminars with Prof Phil may continue their line-of-study in the technique and methods they have been individually adapting and modifying with the professor, including the use of an egg emulsion ground or 'imprimatura'.

In this workshop, traditional, experimental and intuitive approaches offer creative workers valuable insights while providing hands-on tools, techniques, methods and materials. This course is designed to assist the BEGINNING artist in developing alternative modes of expression and empower their creativity and intuition, or CREATUITIVE qualities.RETURNING artists can also choose to experiment, or to refine and strengthen their current direction. Perfect for the beginner, the 'stuck' artist who may need to express spontaneous artistic energy while refining their own personal language, or the highly accomplished painter who wants to develop their technical knowledge. Introduction to a variety of painting techniques including washes, glazes, creating textures and using inks, acrylics, oils and painting mediums will be available to develop alternative modes of expression. Experimental approaches to putting down paint with untraditional tools and methods can add some interesting discoveries for the 'beginning' and 'returning artist' alike.BEGINNING or RETURNING ARTISTS may also opt to simply refine the approach to 'mische' technique that they have been engaged in by working closely with the professor on an 'individualized plan' of study and even opting to extend the 2 week seminar into a 3 week line-of-study (discounted tuition will apply for 3 week-study). The workshop finishes with Prof. Phil's unique "collective constructive critique" of completed works. This workshop is a veritable alchemy of art that mixes the knowledge of the old masters with inventive-contemporary mixed-media techniques.

Art holiday in Umbria in the center of Italy: live and learn about its history, art, artists, and live a dream come true in the green heart of Italy. Workshops are open to anyone wishing to have a creative-holiday in a natural setting of great beauty, peace and harmony. The site is in a great location; in close proximity to the major cultural art centers of Italy. Less than 2 hours from Florence. Plunge into the stillness of its undulated countryside. Lose yourself in the tinted colors of itʼs landscape, similar to those painted by Perugino. It brings us back to being in harmony with the secret rhythm of a world. Art Farm Gaia occupies a large rural area on the right bank of the Tevere river, with a spectacular view of the Martani Mountains. Papiano is about 15 minutes from the city of Perugia and is near the town of Marsciano, where scattered hamlets and castles of rare beauty, such as those found in Santʼ Apollinare and Spina. In Marsciano, oak groves share the environment with the Mediterranean landscape and the cultivation of vines, olives, sunflowers and wheat.
